Design Process

Designing an environment for a home, shop or outdoor space is one of the most exciting elements of my work. For a timber frame much of the design is spent on joinery as much as the overarching aesthetic. If I’m excited about a design existing only in the virtual world, then fabrication and installation will be an act of passion and meaning.

I work with builders and architects to fit these designed elements into the scope of any given building project. Much of what I design is structural, so I also work with my favorite structural engineering firm: Fire Tower Engineers. They lead the way in wooden structural engineering, and help bring beauty into strength.

Renderings, complex or simple are almost always a part of my design process. To experiment with light, color and composition can bring a concept much closer to an accurate vision. I not only include this process for clients, but It also aids my creativity and excitement. I do not offer turn key construction and rarely will I clad or roof a structure I design and fabricate, but I have and am most willing to design the environment in which these elements will reside. This may include interiors complete with furniture and fenestration aligned with “view sheds” of the proposed position of any given structure according to sun. This allows for the subtle play of light and shadow that will be experienced in the real world.
